2nd Annual Green Ribbon Schools Award
Posted On: Oct 01, 12

The Hawaii Department of Education invites you to participate in the 2nd annual U.S. Department of Education (ED) Green Ribbon Schools (GRS) competition. This competition is open to all public, charter, and private schools in Hawai'i.
The GRS program will recognize schools that have significantly reduced their environmental impact, increased their energy efficiency, positively impacted the health of their students and staff, and graduated students who are environmentally-minded and sustainability literate.
The application process is designed to encourage schools to evaluate their operations against national and local best practices. Participating schools will gain valuable experience by identifying potential cost saving measures and offer students and staff a new outlook on their surroundings to become environmental, economic, and social stewards of a sustainable Hawaii. Schools are encouraged to complete the application regardless of how well developed their sustainability initiatives are at present.
While the award confers no federal funds, GRS winners draw national and local media coverage, community support and pride for the school community. Last year, 'Ewa Makai Middle and Hawai'i Preparatory Academy were among the 78 schools nationally selected by ED as GRS in the inaugural program.
Submit your intent to apply by e-mailing Gilbert Chun, Auxiliary Services Branch Administrator by October 15, 2012.
