ĀINA In Schools

New 'ĀINA IS school Mililani Uka Elementary started their school year with an 'ĀINA Family Night complete with fun, hands on activities to highlight what 'ĀINA In Schools means to their school. Families made container gardens, learned about vermicomposting and enjoyed refreshing naturally flavored water. Every family enjoyed a healthy snack poi smoothie sample as an introduction to the 'ĀINA Nutrition Lessons that newly recruited and trained parent docents will be teaching the students.

Last month, Kindergarten, 1st and 5th grade students planted beans, sunflowers, and a butterfly garden as part of their 'ĀINA In Schools garden lessons. Some lucky 4th graders also planted kalo during their first lesson of a new Hawaiian Garden curriculum being piloted at seven 'ĀINA schools. Here is what one student had to say, "Thank you for helping us plant the taro patch. We are now like a real working ahupua'a. 'ĀINA In Schools is a really great program. It brought us all together to cooperate and put responsibility on our shoulders. We are fortunate to try out this program."
