Healthy Snacks & Waste-Free Classroom Celebrations
Posted On: Nov 01, 12It's that time of the year again, the holidays are upon us! Here are some ideas for reducing waste and meeting the Hawai'i Department of Education's Wellness Policy for snacks and parties:
- Create a "Waste-Free Celebration Bin" that includes reusable plates, cups, utensils and cloth napkins. Keep on hand for classroom parties.
- Make "Fruit and Herbal Water" instead of offering sugary drinks. In a large pitcher add sliced fruits, veggies, and herbs from the garden. Fill with ice and filtered tap water to create a refreshing, low sugar drink. Use reusable cups for serving.
- Serve "Healthy Party Treats" like fruit kabobs, banana sorbet, yogurt pops, apple or banana chips.
- Remember healthy snack basics: choose fresh, local fruits & veggies, whole grain bread, muffins & crackers and add protein for lasting power.
