About Kokua Earth Action Projects & Keiki Kokua Day
Each year, we invite Hawai’i schools, grades K-12, to start a Kokua Earth Action Project. Groups submitting outstanding Kokua Earth Action Project proposals will be honored and showcased on our website.

What is a Kokua Earth Action Project?
A Kokua Earth Action Project is an environmental service learning initiative aimed at taking care of our islands and encouraging long-lasting change in your classrooms, schools or community. Some project ideas include: instituting a program to compost lunch waste at school, starting an on-campus garden, setting up a recycling or water catchment program, adopting a stream or beach and more. If your school has a copy of The Complete Guide to Service Learning* by Catheryn Berger Kaye, it may help your group to choose which issue or concern they would like to address with their earth action project. View past KEAP projects here.
How to Participate in KEAP: Start by choosing an Earth Action Project and create a plan for how you’ll carry it out.
Mini-grants Available for KEAP Supplies: A small number of mini-grants are available to school groups submitting KEAP proposals. These mini-grants shall not exceed $200 per classroom teacher and can be used to purchase supplies to carry out Kokua Earth Action Project initiatives. Please refer to our Environmental Educational Mini Grant page to download the application.
Proposal applications for the 2011-2012 school year will be available July 1.
