ʻĀINA Schools Updates

Throughout the everchanging 2020-21 school year, teachers and volunteers at ʻĀINA Schools have been utilizing digital adaptations to keep ʻĀINA lessons going for students. Check out how some of these amazing ʻĀINA advocates have been bringing ʻĀINA lessons to their students: 

Haleʻiwa & Liholiho Elementary Schools

At Haleʻiwa Elementary School, 2nd grade teacher Jennifer Lee has been incorporating ʻĀINA Nutrition Lessons into her virtual classes. She has worked hard to ensure her students are still receiving main learning objectives, like getting to know the ʻĀINA Food Guide and eating Close to the Source. Jennifer shared her ‘ĀINA slideshows with Jan Yap at Liholiho, who has utilized them in her ʻĀINA Nutrition classes that she’s teaching virtually from her kitchen! We love connecting ʻĀINA School teachers so they can share their teaching tools!

Waialua Elementary School

Bob Leinau has been an ʻĀINA Docent for the last 4 years and is always a class favorite with his joyful presence and love of composting! When distance learning became the new normal, Jill Hirota and the 3rd grade team at Waialua Elementary asked Bob to continue as their ʻĀINA Docent and conduct virtual monthly compost lessons for the third graders. These lessons have utilized ʻĀINA Visual Aids and examples from Bob’s own home compost systems! 

Waiʻalae Public Charter School

Brian Shimabukuro is a 4th grade teacher at Waiʻalae Public Charter School and one of many awesome ʻĀINA advocates. He has been teaching monthly lessons and utilizes the ʻĀINA Curriculum and other resources to create interactive slide shows that he shares with his students. Brian explains that ʻĀINA fits into the bigger Social Studies and Hawaiian Studies framework at Waiʻalae Public Charter School.
