A warm welcome to the Department of Education PDE3 ‘ĀINA Garden and Nutrition Curriculum Educator Training Cohort! This 2019-20 school year, 58 DOE teachers of grades ranging from K-12 are partaking in the ‘ĀINA In Schools teacher training. In September, the group kicked off their professional development, diving into the ‘ĀINA In Schools Garden, Compost, and Nutrition Curriculum!
ʻĀINA In Schools staff, with assistance from one of KHF’s interns from UH West Oʻahu, Rainbow Uliʻi, harvested Over 250 huli of over 15 varieties of kalo. The plants were a donation from Waimea Valley, well-known curators of an extensive collection of taro. Along with their huli for planting, ʻĀINA Schools will receive information about each variety of kalo they will plant in their 4th grade Hawaiian Gardens. At the end of the school year, students will harvest the kalo to cook and eat, or kuʻiʻai.
