ʻĀINA In Schools End of Year Garden Parties (Solomon, Sunset Beach, Lāʻie)

June 02, 2022

Solomon Elementary School celebrated in style at their End of Year Garden Party on May 13th with over 100 students and family members in attendance! Activities during the celebration included a Sunflower Seed Harvest, an “Exotic Vegetable Petting Zoo”, a Chef Visit where participants made their own Garden filled Lettuce Wraps, a Garden Scavenger Hunt, Vegetable based Arts and Craft stations and more.

Sunset Beach Elementary School beautified their gardens during the End of Year Garden Party on May 13th. A team of students, teachers, parents, and Kōkua Hawai’i Foundation staff members put in some work; old veggies were pulled out and composted, buckets of invasive nut grass were removed, mulch was spread between the beds, and cover crop was planted in the garden beds to rejuvenate the soil over the summer.

Lāʻie Elementary hosted their End of Year Garden Party on Wednesday, May 25th. With a small group of community volunteers, all the garden beds around campus were able to be covered and protected using wood chips and cardboard sheet mulch. Cardboard sheet mulch is a great way to smother unwanted vegetation and  increase organic matter in your soil while conserving water and reusing materials that would otherwise be thrown away.
