KHF Field Trip Grants
September 01, 2022
Hauʻula Elementary fourth graders recently visited Waimea Valley for their first field trip of the year. It was also the first Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation funded field trip this school year! Students learned about the ahupuaʻa system and the hale being built in the valley. The keiki worked in teams to prepare different parts of koʻi (stone adzes) by braiding cordage, sharpening rocks, using ʻopihi shells to scrape bark off the handle, and mashing kukui nuts to polish it. One of their favorite highlights was meeting a baby pig that the Waimea Valley staff have adopted!
Kōkua Hawaiʻi Field Trip Grants are available to all Hawaiʻi schools. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis at kokuahawaiifoundation.org/fieldtrips.
