New Recycling Program for all Oʻahu Schools!

October 03, 2016

Beginning October 1, all school recycling and trash hauling for all Oʻahu Department of Education (DOE) schools will be handled by West Oʻahu Aggregate. Schools are asked to follow these guidelines to maximize proper recycling and to avoid extra fees:

  • Deposit all recyclable items into the recycling bin.
  • Collapse/flatten all cardboard boxes before placing into the recycling bin to save space.
  • Avoid contamination: Do not deposit non-recyclable items into the recycling bin.
  • Contamination increases fees and can lead to the whole bin being considered “trash”
  • Recycling and trash bins are only for the school. Lock (use contractor’s lock) bins to prevent use by outsiders and potential contamination.
  • Do not deposit recyclable items into the regular trash bin. If trash bin is full, put extra bags (overage) of trash on the side of the trash bin. Truck driver will pick up all extra bags after unloading/emptying the container into the truck. DO NOT deposit extra bags of regular trash into the recycling bin.

Recyclables shall consist of the following mixed materials:
Please recycle only the below materials. Contamination increases fees and can lead to the whole bin being considered “trash”.

  • Plastics (non-HI5) with resin codes #1 (PETE) or #2 (HDPE) – Remove lids/caps. Plastics #1 & #2 are recyclable. They are commonly found on soft drink bottles & other beverages, cooking oil bottles, peanut butter jars, detergent bottles, shampoo, vitamin, milk jugs, etc.
  • Glass bottles and jars – Remove and discard lids and tops; okay to leave labels on.
  • Newspapers – No magazine and glossy inserts.
  • Corrugated cardboard boxes – Corrugated only. No single layer chipboard such as cereal boxes, detergent boxes, tissue boxes, etc.
  • White and colored office paper – Bond paper only and paper bags.
  • Aluminum and tinned ferrous cans – Rinse, okay to crush.
