October is National Farm to School Month

October 01, 2020

It’s the 10th anniversary of National Farm to School Month, a time to celebrate the importance of Farm to School programs like ʻĀINA In Schools! Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation will be joining families, students, educators, chefs and food producers around the state and nation to celebrate! Throughout October, our activities will be focused on expressing appreciation, amplifying edible education, and engaging community through farm to school to create a more just food system for all. This month’s newsletter has tons of ways you can get involved or check out our Farm to School Month Blog for more resources, tips & ideas!

ʻĀINA Chefs are Cooking for Change!

Kokua Hawaii Foundation is excited to partner with some of our favorite ʻĀINA Chefs to present ʻĀINA Cooking for Change, a virtual family cooking series every Sunday in October at 1:00pm HST. The series will be hosted by Chef Ed Kenney, KHF Board Member and local food champion, and will feature Chef Dave Caldiero, Chef Mark “Gooch” Noguchi, Chef Lamont Brown and Chef Tiffanie Masutani. All cooking classes will be hosted live on Zoom where families and KHF members can cook alongside ʻĀINA Chefs and their keiki, make connections to the ʻĀINA In Schools curriculum and learn about the most up-to-date farm to school and local food policies. Recipes will highlight ‘ulu and feature locally grown produce from schools gardens and partner farms across Oʻahu. Each family that registers will be eligible to receive a cooking kit with featured ingredients donated by the Chef Hui.

Other Ways To Celebrate Farm to School Month!

Families: Plan a locally grown meal for your family, visit your local farmers’ market while observing safety and social distancing rules, plant a garden, start a worm bin!

Students: Learn about local farmers by going to a farmers’ market and ask the farmers about where and how they grow food; talk to your parents, grandparents, siblings, guardians, and friends about why you love Farm to School, and encourage them to “Buy Local.”

Teachers:  ʻĀINA Farm Field Trips are a great way to celebrate Farm to School month and connect students to how food is grown and the farmers who grow it! Check out these virtual farm field trips at Hoʻokuaʻāina in Maunawili and Keiki and Plow in Hawaiʻi Kai. If you are a Hawaiʻi teacher and interested in creating grow kits or cooking kits to pass out to students, please apply for a Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation Project Grant to support your efforts.

Farmers: Host a virtual tour of your farm for students, virtually visit a classroom to talk about your farming operation, check out this webinar on local food procurement to Hawaiʻi DOE for their ʻAina Pono school meal program!

School Food: Kids can’t eat a virtual lunch, and farmers can’t sell virtual vegetables! It’s time to recognize the school food heroes who serve our children meals every day, and use their school food dollars to support our local food producers. Help appreciate these front line heroes by sharing this video and join these School Food Heroes supporting organizations: TIPS for School Meals That Rock, Chef Ann Foundation, Life Time Foundation, Wellness in the Schools, and Whole Kids Foundation.
