Plastic Free Hawaiʻi School Mural Contest Winner 2022!

May 04, 2022

We are proud to announce that the winner for the 2022 Plastic Free Hawai'i School Mural Contest is Waiʻanae Elementary School! All three 4th grade classes created individual murals with materials that were collected from school campus and brought in from home.

Aloha ʻĀina” (Most Thought Provoking) depicts love of the land by showing the difference between caring for and not caring for our island home. The students also wanted to show that it's up to the people to keep the island plastic free. In the “Laulima” themed mural (Best Use of Bottle Caps) the students wanted to show that they can work together to make Hawaiʻi plastic free. In the “Mālama ʻĀina” mural (Most Universal Message), students wanted to show that we need to take care of and love the land. As the winning school Waiʻanae Elementary will be receiving a water refill station. All 4th grade students will also receive prizes and a virtual presentation for the entire class from Upcycle Hawaiʻi.

We would like to acknowledge the 11 other schools that also submitted murals: Hahaʻione Elementary, Keolu Elementary, Leihoku Elementary, Le Jardin Academy, Konawaena Middle, Our Savior Lutheran, Roosevelt High, St. Andrew’s Priory, Kīpapa Elementary School, Voyager Public Charter, and Waiʻalae Elementary. All 337 student participants, 13 teachers and 42 adult supporters received Plastic Free Hawaiʻi prize packs! Schools also received an Award Certificate for exemplary work. Each mural was unique and supported this year's theme: Innovation. Mahalo to all the participating schools this year!
