Kōkua Compost Program
The Kōkua Compost Program at Kōkua Learning Farm is a community-based conservation solution that transforms wasted food from local schools, camps, and restaurants into nutrient-dense compost. Using an in-vessel composter named “Tina,” alongside three additional composting methods, the program recovers over 2,000 lbs of food waste weekly. Through coordinated collection, curing, distribution, and hands-on education, the program helps community members of all ages understand that wasted food can be food for plants.

Compost For Our Community
Compost is given to schools, farmers, and local gardeners, where it improves soil health, reduces pollution, lessens reliance on imported fertilizers, and helps lower the production costs of locally grown food. By sharing the composting process and centering community education within the food cycle, the program uplifts community members as essential participants in the food system, nurturing behaviors grounded in aloha ʻāina with intentions of building a resilient food-sovereign community where stewardship of ʻāina is shared.
